This is certainly one of the more unusual instruments to come through the shop. At first glance it resembles a violin, but its unconventional outline and construction immediately make it stand out from a traditional instrument. The owner simply wanted a fresh set of Dominant strings with a Pirastro E string, giving me the opportunity to examine the instrument more closely while performing a routine setup. As with any string replacement, the old strings were removed, the pegs were lubricated, and the string grooves in both the nut and bridge were treated with a soft #1 pencil to reduce friction. One unexpected surprise was the tailpiece, whose string holes were unusually small and required a slight enlargement before the new strings could be installed. The following photographs document this interesting instrument and its fresh setup.
