Custom Tailpiece Mount for a Shadow Cello Pickup

The Shadow pickup on this instrument was originally mounted using a foam pad that clamped onto the strings between the bridge and tailpiece. Although the system worked, I was concerned that supporting the pickup through the strings could influence the instrument's natural vibration and tone. My goal was to create a mounting bracket that attached directly to the metal tailpiece instead, eliminating any pressure on the strings while providing a secure mounting point for both the pickup and the output jack. To achieve this, I created custom molded inserts that precisely matched the contour of the tailpiece. The inserts were bonded into leather pads, allowing them to act as flexible hinges that conform to the tailpiece as the bracket is tightened. Once assembled, the opposing leather hinges create a secure, cushioned attachment that protects the finish while firmly supporting the pickup and output jack.

  • Remove Original Mount: Remove the original bracket so it no longer clamps onto the strings between the bridge and tailpiece.
  • Drill the Tailpiece: Drill a mounting hole in the metal tailpiece for the new bracket.
  • Protect the Finish: Wrap the tailpiece and bracket with cellophane to keep the molding material from sticking.
  • Create the Molds: Pack molding material between the bracket and tailpiece to capture the exact contour.
  • Remove the Molds: Allow the molding material to cure overnight, then remove the custom-fitted inserts.
  • Prepare the Leather: Cut two oversized leather pieces to support the molded inserts.
  • Bond the Inserts: Glue the molded inserts into the leather, allowing them to self-align during assembly.
  • Trim and Shape: Trim the leather and finish the edges for a clean appearance.
  • Dye and Seal: Dye the leather black and apply a protective finish.
  • Final Assembly: Tighten the bracket to the tailpiece. The leather-backed inserts provide a secure, cushioned fit while supporting both the pickup and the output jack without placing pressure on the strings.
