How much does it cost to rehair a violin bow? Just $22 if you can leave the bow for one week or so. This allows me to schedule violin bow rehairs evenly throughout the week, which keeps the cost down for you. If you need a faster turnaround, I can rehair a bow sooner for an additional rush fee.

Bow rehairing is a skilled process that takes practice and consistency. I typically rehair three or more bows per day. The first step in a proper violin bow rehair is removing the old hair. Please do not cut the old hair out before bringing your bow to the shop. To remove the ferrule (ring) from the frog, the hair often needs to be pulled out carefully, sometimes one strand at a time. If you must cut the hair for any reason, please leave at least four inches of hair on each end of the bow.

Selecting the Correct Amount of Hair: Once the old plugs and wedge are removed, the next step in the bow rehairing process is selecting the correct amount of horsehair. A stiffer bow generally requires more hair for proper balance and response. I usually begin with approximately fifteen extra hairs and then, once the rehair is complete, remove individual hairs one at a time until the bow achieves the proper tension and playing balance.

Installing the Hair and Final Adjustment: I rehair bows starting at the frog because the strongest part of the hair should be positioned there, where most of the playing force is applied. After tying the correct knot length, the frog plug is installed and the wedge is carefully fitted. The hair is then combed and lightly dampened. Measuring the hair while slightly damp ensures consistent length regardless of ambient humidity. After tying off the tip end and replacing the tip plug, the hair is lightly dampened again, taking care not to wet the area near the wedge. If moisture wicks under the wedge, it can loosen and disturb the spread of the horsehair. The hair then dries for about an hour, allowing it to stretch and settle evenly before final adjustment.

Why Are My Violin Bow Rehair Prices So Reasonable?

  • Consistent Pricing: I developed the habit years ago of keeping my bow rehair prices steady rather than raising them incrementally. Consistency has worked well for both me and my customers.
  • Personal Workmanship: I perform every violin bow rehair myself. Because there are many precise steps in the process, I can pause to answer the phone or assist a customer and then return to the bench without losing continuity or quality.
  • Experience from Volume: Rehairing a high number of bows gives me valuable insight. I regularly see the small mistakes that can occur in bow rehairs done elsewhere, which helps me continually refine my own technique.
  • Very Low Return Rate: Nothing in craftsmanship is ever 100%, but issues are extremely rare; typically around one in a thousand rehairs,  and when something does arise, I take care of it promptly.

A couple of mariachi players brought in a large batch of violin bows. One player consistently wore out hair on the playing side, while the other tended to break hair on the opposite side. With so many half-black, striped rehairs to complete, I realized I needed to refine my technique for keeping the black and white hair cleanly separated before installing the wedge.

Why Horsehair Is Used for Bow Rehairing: Horsehair is traditionally used for bow rehairing because it is strong, flexible, and provides the proper amount of grip to make the string vibrate and produce a clear, singing tone.

  • White Horsehair: Generally preferred for violin bows because it is slightly softer and smoother than black hair. This allows for easier string contact and helps produce a more delicate, nuanced sound.
  • Black Horsehair: Often used for bass bows because it offers increased grip on the strings, which helps produce a strong, full tone.
  • Mixed or Striped Hair: Some violinists prefer straight black hair or a mixed rehair with a black strip along the playing edge for added grip and response.
  • Cello Preferences: Some cello players also prefer a blend of black and white hair to balance grip and smoothness.

Humidity and Horsehair: Humidity has a significant effect on horsehair. Changes in moisture can cause the hair to lengthen or shorten, so the general climate in your area must be considered when performing a professional bow rehair.

Overall, rehairing a violin, viola, cello, or bass bow is an essential part of proper bow maintenance, ensuring the bow performs reliably and produces its best possible tone.

Hi Craig,

I just got the bow in the mail, looks great and is a terrific rehair. I appreciate it very much and your prices are terrific. Re-hair and grip here in New York city would cost at least $115!

Thanks Again, Nick

Hello Craig,
I have 200 students playing violin, viola, cello and bass. Needless to say I need some bows re-haired. I've been reading about synthetic hair - have you ever used that? Supposedly it lasts a long time, plays and sounds wells and doesn't stretch.

I hate the idea of just tossing out bows sticks instead of fixing them. Your prices are reasonable. I'd like to mail you a couple and see what we think.

Best regards,

Jeanette

Occasionally customers have brought in synthetic hair and I have rehaired their bows. It's somewhat of a pain to work with because it does not have the normal stretch of real horsehair.

I need a few bows rehaired, and I live in South Carolina. Can I just send them to you UPS, or do I need to notify you first? You would be able to ship them back wouldn't you?

If I mailed my bow, would you rehair it and mail it back to me? I live in Delaware. What would your shipping cost be?

It depends on the weight, the type of tube you use and the cost of insurance. My guess is that it would be around $10.00

Hi,

I live in Texas and our local here has stopped wanting to do too much work on classic vintage bows.. Thinks new bows better, but I like the wood of the old bows. How do I mail bows to you??

I just bought a nice bow marked Viorin. a Copy of course. It has good camber until you get to the tip . The tip is tuning to the right a little. Would you be able to straighten a tip?

Thanks

Sandy

Most people use USPS Priority Mail.

The bow can be straightened or more camber can be added. From your description it seems like the head of the bow is twisted. If that's the case, it can be heated and straightened so that the flat plane of the tip and the flat plane of the frog are parallel.

I newly bought a full size violin, but I still keep my old bow. the roller at the end of it, which can tighten and loosen the hair, falls, and I can't find it. It also needs rehaired.

Nicole, The bow nut can be easily replaced for a minimal cost especially if it's nickle, then it can be rehaired.

Never before had I been told about the "salt N pepper" effect on the bow; mixing regular hair with black hairs - i decided to try it because he said the hair would break alot less - He was right! I'm so happy I was taught about that! that effect works great if you're playing pop music - say on an electric violin. He saved me LOTS of extra hairs being lost from my pop gigs! Thanks! I'll be coming back; and I always try and refer fellow musicians because his bow rehair price is the best in town!

Hi,

I like your website's 'layout' design---it is on a par with the best European professional ones! And I like the 'professionalism' and knowledgeable write-ups of your craftsmanship.

I came by three old violin bows---2 are 4/4 full length, one 3/4 length, but the ferrules are working 0kay.

Can you 'quote' me on the cost of rehairing and postage to Ireland?

Much appreciated!
Joe
