These thumbnail designs were part of a larger set of images displayed on the main hallway bulletin board of the Green Hotel, becoming a familiar part of the space for guests passing through over many decades. Created by the Pasadena Daily or Star-News as iconic graphic representations of each year’s Rose Parade from 1908 through 1965, they were not directly related to the hotel itself, but they helped shape the visual character of the hallway displays. Preserving these designs captures a small but meaningful intersection of local journalism, civic celebration, and the everyday environment of the Green Hotel; an informal record of what visitors would have seen on the walls as history quietly unfolded.

Rose Queens from the Past
Displayed for many years on one of the large exhibition boards in the main hallway of the historic Green Hotel, this collection honors the early Rose Queens and the beginning of a cherished Pasadena tradition. The selection and coronation of the Rose Queen became an established custom after the first Queen was announced in 1905.
Rose Queens appeared in the Tournament of Roses Parade intermittently in the early years, until 1930 when Holly Halsted was crowned. Her reign marked the beginning of an unbroken line of Tournament Royalty that has continued to the present day — a tradition that remains central to the spirit and pageantry of the Rose Parade.
