A native of Southern California, Jim Stanley first studied clarinet with James Mack and continued his education with Roger Salander and Mitchell Lurie at USC.  Jim also studied composition while at USC, winning the Jimmy McHugh Composition Prize in 1978.  Since then, Jim has played in numerous community orchestras throughout the Southland, including principal clarinet with the Topanga Symphony and Glendale College orchestras as well as the Pasadena Community Orchestra, Crown City Symphony and Beach Cities Symphony.
In addition to his orchestral playing, Jim has also been an active chamber musician, playing in several recent concerts benefiting both the Topanga and Crown City Symphonies.

Jim has also had a successful career as a tenor, singing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Pasadena Chamber Orchestra Chorus.  A job as tenor section leader at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills led to his current position as choir director at Church of the Angels in Pasadena.

An active composer, Jim's orchestral composition “Inside Passages” was premiered by the Crown City Symphony in 2013.  Several of his choral compositions have been published by GIA, CanticaNova Publications, and St. James Music Press.

More concert details are available on our Concerts page.

Under the leadership of Maestro Marvin Neumann, Crown City Symphony is an outstanding local symphony with a growing reputation in the community for presenting fine soloists and familiar standards as well as new music.

Crown City Symphony has been fortunate to receive grants from Showcase House for the Arts, Pasadena Tournament of Roses® Foundation, City of Pasadena, Los Angeles Breakfast Club, and Pasadena Arts League.  It is an all volunteer orchestra and depends on donations for all its expenses.  It was originally sponsored by the Pasadena Senior Center, but is now under the sponsorship of The Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena.

CCS concerts are made possible by the sponsorship of the Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena, and funds received through private donations.
